It was more expedient than waiting out the purchase period of the Clark family home and then having it transferred back into Martha's name. The "For Sale" and "Foreclosure" sign went up in a celebratory bonfire the night they moved the furniture back in.
Watching the liveliness was far more difficult. The demonstrative affection between mother and son made Bruce's heart ache uncomfortably. Lois fit in perfectly beside them. Aglow with lights and sound, the house beamed and breathed like a loved one reunited with its family.
He'd left at the first respectable opportunity.
Grey skies and a bitter breeze greeted him the following day when he walked up to the manor from the lake. The shell of what had been his childhood home stood still and empty, a monument to generations gone. As the grass rustled around his legs, he dug his hands deeper into his pockets.
It could be great again, he decided. But it would never house a family.
